Superstition Mountains

Living in a world that is constantly connected, it can be considered a luxury to have a place nearby that allows you to disconnect. For me, that place has become the Superstition Mountains.

There is so much to love about the Superstitions. When I first moved to Arizona, I remember hearing all about the wicked history that surrounds the area, from hidden gold of the Lost Dutchman Gold Mine, to the sacred land of the Apache.

While the history draws visitors in, it is typically the beauty that keeps them coming back.

With trails for every hiker, Superstition Mountains is truly a place that I encourage you to visit. It is almost like you can feel the energy of the land just by being there.

The mighty saguaro and cholla cacti that line the range are like something out of a fairytale, while the scenery below you will continue to take your breath away as you climb higher.

If you are familiar with this area, I am sure you have heard of Goldfield Ghost Town, the small, restructured town that serves to tell the history of gold panning and outlaws. This was my first introduction to the wonders of the Superstitions. With the main hiking trails only a short drive away from the town, after our visit, we made it a point to keep coming back.

Hieroglyphic Trail,

while not overly difficult, offers a preview of the various types of scenery in the Superstition Mountains. The hike is mostly at a slight incline and rocky in spots, but hiking never feels difficult when there is so much beauty surrounding you. After hiking up through the giant cacti and wildflowers, a final climb brings you to the top of the trail, greeting you with trickling water pools and incredible views.

At the top of this climb, an old cave can also be explored; however, the most magnificent sight would be that of the petroglyphs.

These petroglyphs are believed to be created by the Hohokam Indians, setting them at around 1,500 years old.

The beauty of the Superstitions is vast, and the energy of the land is something you have to feel to believe.

Not only is hiking a great option, but the area also offers camping (do it), tours, and horseback riding. Goldfield itself is also filled with things to do for people of all ages.

(Check out Lost Dutchman State Park for great camping!)

Whatever you may be looking for, I am sure you can find it here.
